The Fuss Over Facebook

I remember when ‘MySpace’ made it’s arrival a few years back. And while I’m comfortable with my degree of being ‘internet-savvy’, I can’t say that I felt any drawing towards having a MySpace account. Then came Facebook.

I was told that Facebook was geared more towards college kids on universities across the country. Again, I just didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything by not having one of these accounts.

But over time, the more I heard about Facebook (and all three of my girls have accounts) the more curious I grew.

When I mentioned to the girls last year about maybe getting a Facebook account, I was quickly discouraged by one of my ‘un-named’ daughters saying it was for ‘younger people’. ( And this was not even by the daughter of mine who’s Christmas gift to me two years ago was a nose/ear-hair trimmer and teeth whitener! )

So a few months ago, I waded in to see what all the fuss was about and signed up for a Facebook account. Once I activated my account, I really didn’t know what to do with it. Go figure. I did post a picture, my email address, and my web site link here, of course. It just seemed to me that if you are going to communicate with someone, once you locate them, you just use email, which I do quite frequently.

Did I mention that another daughter of mine told me that email was “out – old fashioned”.

Since When ?!?!?!

Anyway, I nearly forgot about the Facebook account, but then started getting these occasional notices in my email that someone had put me on their ‘friend’s list’. I still didn’t know what to do with it. So at Thanksgiving, when the girls were in, I humbled myself and asked them to enlighten me on how this all works. When I showed them my page, they muffled their giggles saying something as to the fact I had less than three friends.

I felt like a rejected 5th grader who was the last one picked in gym class to be on a dodge ball team.

After a few more notices in the past few weeks regarding people putting me on their Facebook friends list, I got brave and jumped back in. Apparently I was suppose to ‘accept’ these new friends invites, which I did and now I’m getting in even deeper. Things are getting more complicated with this. My goal for the holidays while I am off from school is to figure out what ‘writing on the wall’ and ‘getting poked’ is all about!

I’ll show those daughters of mine that I’m still relevant and ‘with it’ and ‘in the happening crowd’ !

But first, I think I’ll go trim these pesky ear hairs of mine!

Merry Christmas! 🙂
